Local SEO basics: how to get found on Google near you

"SEO" sounds like a dark art, and plenty of people are happy to charge you as if it is. For a local business, though, the fundamentals are surprisingly simple. You don't need to compete with national brands — you just need to be the obvious choice when someone nearby searches for what you do. Here's what genuinely moves the needle.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single most powerful thing a local business can do, and it's free. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you in the map results and the little box on the right of a search. Claim it, then fill in everything: correct name, address and phone number, opening hours, services, and plenty of photos. A complete, active profile beats a half-finished one every time.

2. Get reviews — and reply to them

Reviews are rocket fuel for local rankings and trust. Ask every happy customer to leave one on Google. It feels awkward at first, but most people are glad to help if you simply ask. Then reply to them — all of them, good and bad. It shows Google you're active and shows customers you care.

3. Keep your details identical everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way across your website, Google, Facebook and any directories. "St" in one place and "Street" in another, or an old phone number lingering somewhere, sends mixed signals. Consistency is a quiet but real ranking factor.

4. Use the words your customers actually search

Think about what someone types when they need you: "emergency plumber near me", "best Indian takeaway", "MOT in [your town]". Use those natural phrases in your page titles, headings and content — not stuffed in awkwardly, just written the way a real person would. Having a dedicated page for each main service helps too.

5. Make sure your site is fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on a phone, and Google knows it. A slow site or one that's fiddly on mobile will be pushed down the rankings and lose visitors before they even read a word. Speed and a clean mobile layout aren't optional extras — they're part of being found.

6. Add a bit of fresh content now and then

You don't need to blog every week, but the occasional helpful article — answering the questions your customers actually ask — gives Google more reasons to show your site and more ways for people to find you. This page is a small example of exactly that.

7. Get the technical basics right

Behind the scenes, a few things help Google understand and trust your site: a clear page structure, descriptive titles and meta descriptions, image alt text, an XML sitemap, and "schema markup" that tells search engines you're a local business. It's not glamorous, but it's the plumbing that makes everything else work. A good web designer sets all of this up so you don't have to think about it.

The honest truth about timing

Local SEO is a slow burn, not an overnight switch. Done consistently, the basics above will steadily lift you up the results over weeks and months — and unlike paid ads, the effect compounds and keeps working long after the effort. Be wary of anyone promising "page one in a week". Real, lasting visibility is built, not bought.
