Does my local business actually need a website in 2026?

It's a fair question. If you're getting customers through Facebook, Instagram or word of mouth, why pay for a website at all? Plenty of local businesses run for years on social media alone. But there's a catch — and once you see it, it's hard to unsee.

Social media is rented land. A website is land you own.

When you build your business on a social platform, you're building on land you don't control. The platform owns your audience, decides who sees your posts, and can change the rules — or your reach — overnight. A website is the one place online that is entirely yours. Your address, your rules, your customers' first impression, on your terms.

People still check for a website before they trust you

When someone is about to spend real money — booking a tradesperson, choosing a takeaway, picking a garage — they Google you. If nothing comes up, or all they find is a half-finished Facebook page, a little doubt creeps in. A clean, professional website does the opposite: it signals that you're established, serious and safe to deal with. For many customers, no website quietly means "next".

What a website does that a social page can't

  • Shows up on Google. Social posts rarely rank for "plumber near me" or "best local takeaway". A well-built website can.
  • Works 24/7 as your best salesperson. It explains what you do, answers common questions, shows your prices and takes enquiries while you sleep.
  • Captures leads on your terms. Contact forms, click-to-call and online booking send enquiries straight to you — not into a feed you might miss.
  • Builds trust with proof. Reviews, photos of real work and clear information turn a curious visitor into a paying customer.
  • Loads fast and looks right on a phone, where most of your customers will find you.

"But I'm not technical"

You don't need to be. A good web designer handles the lot — design, words, the technical bits and getting you found — and explains it in plain English. Your only job is to know your business, which you already do.

The honest answer

If you want to be found by new customers, look credible, and own your corner of the internet rather than renting it, then yes — a website earns its keep many times over. It doesn't need to be expensive or complicated. It just needs to be done properly.
